Newbee finds an ouncer
So we get the best machines and and spend hours in the field for what - tiny nuggets sometimes even a gram. Well this is what one newbee did.
Second camp with the club with an Xterra 70 costing about $600. We went to a new lead in Maryborough, deep diggings and went our seperate ways. Bill the newbee decided to put his xterra down a dig hole round about 1 half feet down that some one hadn't filled in. Got a sound about an inch away from his coil.
36.17 grams - his first nugget. White pipe clay. That night he won the raffle - an Aldi Ultrasonic cleaner, looks like he was smiled upon this weekend. Oh yes I found a .1

Re: Newbee finds an ouncer
Nuggets usually turn up when you try something different.Maybe the person discriminated it out by mistake. As they say"Gold is where you find it".He deserves it and congratulations.Nice to see the Xterra take one.

Re: Newbee finds an ouncer
Well done to the bloke on a club outing and what better way to get his first nugget, and crack the 1 oz barrier.
We can only hope the person that left the hole not filled in reads this and recognises what he did.
3 cheers to Bill from the club for finding that beaut looking nugget.
cheers dave

Re: Newbee finds an ouncer
I had been looking at this spot for some time but never detected it, so when the Dandenong Club came up to Maryborough they ask me ( as I'm a member) if I knew any good spots, so I took them there to try it out, not expecting anything big to come out of the area. Well as you can see I was there when the nugget was found and the look on Bill,s face was worth a million words. He,s smile was bigger than a Cheshire Cat Someone had been there a long time ago with what I would expected to be an 18" coil as his un-filled holes were big and deep. Bill just happened to put his Xterra in that hole and got a target. If it was one of us with our 4500 or 5000 and waved it over the hole and got a signal we would have thought that the person had found junk and thrown it back in the hole so we may have just walked away. Well of course after that very body was checking all the old dig holes and there was many. This is one time that we were glad that the old holes were not filled in as the Xterra would not have picked it up. There were about 4 other very small nuggets found at the same area. The Dandenong Club went back a few more time to the area but nothing big was found after that. About 30 odd nuggets were found this weekend by the club members from different ares.

Re: Newbee finds an ouncer
Gday
Well done to Bill, thats what gold detecting is all about, getting the one with your name on it , the only real problem with getting a big lump as your first peice is that you may feel somewhat dissapointed when you are only getting sub grammers for some time afterwards until you do walk over another good piece.
I have always said that there are skilled detectorists who try really hard and sometimes do well, and there are some that are simply lucky, never the less you still have to be out there having a go and walking the ground so using any detector is better than no detector, and apart from that it would have been a lot of fun for him thumbing his nose at all the others guys waving 5000's etc.
cheers

Re: Newbee finds an ouncer
Bill was out with his Xterra just looking for coins and relic and not really for gold.

Exactly Deutran.
Sucked in to the Silly Bugger who left that chunker behind. Why would you run an 18 inch coil and not bother to dig out all the targets
Given that it was White Pipe Clay,it means the bloke who dug the original hole was a poor prospector.
Good on you Bill for an awesome find.

Re: Newbee finds an ouncer
The latest Minelab Times has a story about an ounce nugget found by a newbie during a GPX-5000 training session.
How lucky is that?
Good on you Bill, it always pays to check unfilled holes. then fill them in.

Re: Newbee finds an ouncer
Maybe if the original prospector took their rubbish out of the hole & then rechecked they would of found it. The nugget was in the wall of hole just above that rubbish. Thanks to them my brother has his 1st nugget. We were looking for gold but don't mind the relic's either.

Congrats to Bill on his find and good luck for the ones to come. Shows the latest and fanciest are not always the key to success. Hope for my ageing 3500.

what a great story and good to see that sometimes Karma hits instantly
especially bad karma to the guy who didn't find it necessary to fill in his
holes - serves you right
