Schizophrenia
So what triggered the actions of the Schizophrenic in Sydney??
There are currently 150,000 to 200,000 schizophrenics in Australia, they are not running around killing people...Well not very often !
There are approx 300,000 schizophrenics in the UK, they are not rampaging around killing people.
So what happened to this poor sole that sent him down a path of bloody destruction?
It seems that he was not receiving correct medication and that, combined with drug and alcohol abuse has not done him any good at all.

Re: Schizophrenia
Very sad to hear what unfolded there Adrian, for even the schizophrenic could have got the right help he needed, if only he had asked for it, or went about it in the right manner .
My heart goes out to the innocent victim's who paid with their lives for just being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
There never is an excuse to take another's life, because one feels their own life ain't worth living anymore, but you are right to say there are many living with mental health issues, no doubt caused by more than one problem of today, but talking with someone about such issues & then looking for help is the beginning towards solving them.
Drowning ones mental problems/sorrows out with alcohol or drug abuse can only intensify the mental issues/problems one faces.
I know not of any person through out my lifetime that hasn't faced or will not face a difficult time physically or mentally throughout that persons life, but talking about mental stress, or some of the problems encountered with such, is the first step towards getting the right help one needs, in order to live a somewhat normal existence once again.
