What is this ?
Does anyone know what this hammer thing is ,please ? I found it while mowing my place . It was sunbaking under a tree where the rains had washed the dirt off it.
It is made of heavy iron and there are ID marks on the hammer end, the round handle and also right on the end of the round base but it is too rusty to read. It is about 10 inches long and appears to be from machinery.
Thanks.

Re: What is this ?
I don't have a clue SOF, the hole in the end is part of the machining process from the lathe.
All I can suggest is; it's a type of home made tack hammer, ?made as an apprentice exercise or tech school project???????????????????
It may have had a wooden handle?
cheers moredeep

Re: What is this ?
Thanks, Moredeep. I live on a very old pastoral lease surrounded by historic mines and thought it could possibly be from either farm or mining machinery.

Re: What is this ?
I think it might be a railway wheeltapper's hammer.

Re: What is this ?
Thanks Hiluxer. You might have it right there. I have never heard that term before and now i look it up there is a museum with wheeltapper hammers and even a very long song dedicated to them.and a wheeltapper's guild to boot !!! You learn something every day.
I found similar hammers online , but not he same one, but very close to what i have.
The nearest railway station was about 3 miles from me ,but closed down 70 or 80 years ago. Good detective work Hiluxer.
