G'day from Tahmoor, nsw.
Thanks for a great forum with so much good info.
I'm currently looking at buying our first proper detector after mucking around at hill End over easter with an old Kinchrome detector we bought at a garage sale for a couple of dollars.
Still undecided over whether to go for a VLF or stump up the extra for a PI machine.
We wish to spend enough to get a reasonable detector, without going overboard.
Most of my detecting will be around the Bathurst/ Hill End, Southern Highlands, and Goulburn areas to start with.
Any advice on what brands/ models to look at would be most appreciated.

Hi Jacko675 and Q31 to the forum.

In answer to your question re which detector to buy, you should've read enough on the forum, posts started by other new comers with exactly the same question as you, to be able to work out roughly how much of a budget you have to spend, and judging from that, you'll be able to work out roughly which detector to get. Realistically though, for purely gold detecting, a PI machine would probably serve you better than a VLF machine out in the gold fields.

Thanks, CostasDee. Yes, I'm tending towards either the ML GPX4500, or WHITES TDI Pro. I've pretty well ruled out Vlf after reading through a heap of threads on here.

Damn good machine that GPX4500, I use one myself, probably the best value for money detector. Maybe try Coiltek Gold Center in Maryborough for a price on a secondhand one or splurge for a new one. Not too sure on how the TDI pro's compare, maybe another member can comment on them...

If it is simplicity of use you are after with proven performance, then its hard to go past a SDC 2300.
Check out Gumtree, they come up occasionaly for around $3200.
