G'day Gus, don't want to be picky mate but the black coils came out with the Extreme.
The 3000 had white coils. Wink

(1) Do coil manufactors have any quality control on coils these days or do they just wait to see if they start getting back coils with a problem and then try and fix it. (2) and do the Manufactors do field reseach on new coils and older coils to see if they break down under field and weather conditions, example:- rough treatment against rocks, braches, dust penertration, hot temperatures of WA, NT, & Qld, Cold Temp. Vic, SA, NSW. Do ML have that system in place, or any other coil manafacture that you know of ??

1: I'm not involved with either of the two after market coil manufacturers enough to comment fully, however I can assure you both of them do pretty exhaustive tests of each and every coil style before it goes on sale, this is based on having field tested various coils for both of them over the years. However sometimes faults do not show up until after release date, it then comes down to the manufacturer to make good on the problems through recalls etc, it is not in their interests to have dissatisfied customers. I think you will find both manufacturers have a very good track record in this respect.

2: The materials used in the coils are pretty well understood as far as longevity is concerned (glues etc), every now and then a batch of coils might have a problem due to one of the suppliers changing specs on the various components (I think Nugget Finder had some issues a long time back with plastics and Coiltek had some recent issues with shielding materials) but neither of them have any control over the way the coil is actually used in the field so it is a little hard to put an exact time frame on coil life spans, however in my experience if a coil is treated well in the field and the actual specs of the detector it is used with has not changed too much then one could expect the coils to last as long as the detector would last. Lastly Minelab have exhaustive testing regimes in place to thoroughly test all their products before release.

Hope this helps,

JP

You are right about the black coils coming out with the Extreme mate, but he has a black coil and the only other coil he has ever bought in 8 years is the Coiltek 10 inch Joey mono. Both still going strong. Maybe the dealer he got it off pulled a swifty?

Thanks Jonathan for your reply. It has given me a bit more insight on what to expect from manufactures on new and late model (second hand) coils. I have some coils that are well over 8 yrs old and running as good as they were when I first brought them, but i don't use them everyday, so this may be why they are still OK. I'm sure your reply will help others as well. "Thanks again"
