I know if I was having a chat with a stranger detectorist whilst they were digging a hole, and they found gold or something else of interest, that I'd feel uncomfy firing up the detector & swinging 3 feet from they're find.... Whats a suitable distance to start searching, 100m, out of sight?

What are some of the other unwritten laws.

Gday

There are of course no real laws in relation to this type of situation, but common decency is really what should prevail, and of course a bit of common sense too.

Put yourself in someone elses boots for a bit, if you were working a bit of a spot that you had put in some effort in to find and someone appeared and proceded to work along side you would you like it?, bet you wouldnt, no harm in stopping and saying gday and all, but to try and muscle in on the spot is poor form and downright rude.

Firstly I would probably stop and say gday, sometimes I have done this and it turns out to be someone I have met before, so I feel this is a polite thing to do, rather than just drive by and ignore them, some people are amiable and talkative while some can be a bit stand offish, but either way I feel the curtious thing to do is to move away from the area and definatley out of detector earshot, specially since I use an external speaker its tends to annoy people, and they could think that you were trying to drive then away also.

Like I said just be curtious and use some common sense when you meet people in the bush, after all most of them are just like you and me, and are just out enjoying the experience and dont want any hassles.

cheers

I love how there are so many guests in here seriously guys make an account lol! but on a more serious subject if your dectecing and getting interference then your to close common sense really other then that its free ground i wouldnt bumhug as has been previously termed but you cannot claim all the ground 20 to 50 m is fair to me but at that range detectors can still have interfernce on top of this if your out with your mates its in you best interest to spread out find as much as you can collectively and split it thats what id do at any rate

theres an unwritten understanding with the locals that if a prospector leaves his pick at his spot he has not finished and will return.it most probably wouldnt work down your way likely loose your spot and your pick! Smile

Hi people,
I haven't swung with anyone yet so i havent thought of this subject to hard. I only have a cheap beeper so going 50/50 with someone that has a minelab gp5000 would be a bit unfair but if they were up 4 it i wouldn't say no.
One of the "unwritten laws" I have heard, and use is, "that a bucket in a hole means they're coming back", but how long is that bucket to sit in that hole? confused

This is so true....Respect is key!!! but as for a distance i would say about a hundred mtrs...A wide berth is always key if you dont know the person!!
I think all above are valid points but.......It aint yours until you have a claim on it or as the ol boys said.."Its in your jar"
You never know...They may put you onto gold you were walking past...LOL

Unwritten laws - Page 2 Empty This is not about the gold, it is showing some respect to be far enough away as not to interfear with another detector, how would you like it if you could not detect because of the interfearance. I have found that at least 50mtrs is most times OK.

There is no doubt that if we find a good patch and somebody else trots up and starts detecting along side  then one tends to get a bit cranky but it is a simple fact that you only have the rights  to the gold that you have found unless you have a mining or exploration lease on the ground you are searching, even if you have pegged the ground it is not your ground until the lease is approved.
To assume the rights to any gold you have not yet found in free ground just because you happen to be detecting that ground is not a fair crack of the whip.
If anybody ventures inside the "Pick throwing distance" (and even tho I reckon it is  a good yardstick), it is a simple indisputable fact that there is nothing you can do to legally stop another person from detecting nearby or even a couple of mtrs away; You can kick and scream and chuck your pick and axe at them or bounce a few .222s between their legs  or whatever but if you cause any harm or injury of any kind you can/will expect to be prosecuted and you will loose.
How would you blokes have got on in the early days when the cry GOLD went out?...... In less time than it takes to say What Th F.... there would be a hundred other blokes appear from out of nowhere digging shoulder to shoulder with ya and if ya so much as gave a dirty look sideways at one of them  he would likely give you a nudge down yer own shaft.

Yeah it pees you off but when push comes to shove there is no such thing as an Unwritten Law.
