My coil dilemma Empty My coil dilemma

Post  slimpickens Fri Sep 30, 2011 11:32 am

Hi all,
I recently bought a NF sadie 8x6 mono , which enabled me to find my first nugget with my 4500. The nugget was found somewhere between 1 and 2 inches deep and it is so small, under .1 gr that it didn't register on my digital scales. A friend who also has the 4500 but is way more experienced than I am, borrowed my Sadie coil, and going over the exact same ground ( a very small gully) picked up another five nuggets of the same size! Experience seems to be everything!
Anyway back to my dilemma, the sadie 8x6" seems to pick up the .1 to .2 gr nuggets to a depth of around 3" and my NF 17x11" mono
picks up the under .3 gr bits at no more than 2 to 3 ", so I want to ask everyone what would be the best coil to pick up .1 to .3 gr nuggets at around the 4" to 8" mark? I need a coil somewhere in the middle between the Nf 8x6'' and the Nf 17x11'' It dosn't matter which brand. Thanks

Shiraz did you both have the same settings?
And same set up with speaker or headphones?
I am not being smart in this next question as i suffer from industrial deafness so can u hear the suttle noise changes?
I have a nugget tech 9 x5.5 and in tests along side a 4000, 4500 and 5000 they all needed fine tuning to pick up the very small bits that i could hear on my extreme.
Although the extreme is a freak of nature and picks up the smallest iron stones that you could imagine.
Maybe play with your settings more before you open your wallet.
I would love to see the result that everyone else posts as my next machine will be a 4500 and i will be doing exactly the same thing chasing the ultra fine bits.
Either way let me know the outcome, and the best coil you find.
good luck.

Hi Maka,
Unfortunately we didn't compare settings which was silly of me, I'll ask him next time. We both were using headphones. Your right about the noise factor. When I put the RX Gain and Stabiliser on factory preset, the machine went very quiet and I started to pick up more signals ( mostly junk) but my confidence went up and I started to concentrate more, till I eventually picked up the tiny nugget. As for my hearing, I'm afraid I listened to too much loud rock n roll in my youth. Maybe I should turn the signal up. I'm leaning towards the ML Commander 11" mono as it seems to be the most stable and should get more depth on the little bits of yella. But what do I know, I'm new to this game.
PS, Nice avatar, do you come here often? pale

Settings are important. I picked up a small bit one morning, and then decided to test later during the day as i had found nothing. It took me ages to reset just to find the bit i easily found that morning. I had changed my settings and swung all day and had no chance of finding anything.
I always carry a small piece with me now in a plastic bottle and drop it regularly after each few ground balances to make sure i havent balanced over the threshold of finding the little ones.
Yes i do come here often...Care to buy me a drink big boy??? lmao.
Check the link where the sig should be down below for some sheer stupidity, ...lol

Hi Shiraz
In nuggets of that size going to a larger coil would most likely reduce the depth. You already have the ideal coil for the job with the sadie or you could try a 6" mono.I use a 8"mono on the small stuff which does a fair job.

Thanks Deutran,
I understand what you saying, but is there a coil to pick up those .1, .2 + .3 gram nuggets at around the 6" mark. If not then the goldfields must be full of those size nuggets at that depth. Maybe its time one of the coil makers tried to reach those nuggets. Question

i think you have the best coil for that job.

if you want to get extra depth, you might have to invest in a GPX 5000 which has the fine gold timings.

THE GPX4500 WILL PICK UP THIS SMALL GOLD AND ALL YOU NEED IS TO KNOW HOW TO USE YOUR MACHINE PROPERLY.

Hi Shiraz
You are right in that a lot of small gold is just out of our reach.I think this is on everyone's wishlist.
Each new detector has a better ability with small gold.Coil selection is only a part of the big picture.
Correct ground balance will give you the maximum depth and clearest signal on faint targets. This is very important.

Thanks for the answers, what I'm hearing is that this $4000 to $6000 detector, the ML4500 can not with any coil currently available, pick up a .1 or .2 or .3 sized nugget at around 6" ?? Question

G'day shiraz

Don't be discouraged, the GPX4500 will pick up .2g &.3g size bits from around 5" to 6" we get ours to do it quite regulary.

We use the ML Commander 11" mono for this task, with the GPX4500, and settings would be something like this.

Front end switches "G" "Enhance" "Fixed" "Mono"
Rear Menu "Rx Gain 12" "Stabalizer 6" "Audio boost" "Target Volume 8" this is using an external booster and twin external speakers.

We also get plenty of .1g size as well, smallest we have detected is 0.04g on about 4 or so times, I would much rather find big nuggets but seeing how you asked, this is what we can find regulary with these machines and this setup.

Hope this helps answer some of your questions.

cheers dave

Gday shiraz

The 4500 is a very capable detector, combined with the right coils and and adjustments it wont miss much at all, the very first thing I noticed when I got my 4500 is its ability to get small pieces at respectable depth, the first few bits I dug made me feel a bit like I had been ripped off, as when they surfaced and were so small I couldnt believe that they gave such a good signal, so this had me scratching around thinking there should have been something else there as well.

The setting davsgold gave you are very similar to what I would use, but it is worth your while to ground balance your machine regularly and also experiment with the signal tone, find out what tone best suits your hearing.

Any deep targets whether they be big or small require the same level of concentration to find, a very slow swing speed and tuning in to hear any subtle changes in the threshold, once you tune it to that the gold will follow.

The minelab 11" commander mono and the minelab 8" mono are the two coils I would favour above all others for small deep gold, and you can be assured that they will both achieve good depth also on anything bigger you might swing over, another coil that I have just started to use that I think will also prove itself is the nuggetfinder 12x7 advantage mono, it has reasonable ground coverage and is super sensitive too.

cheers
