Does anybody on the forum know of a Jack Winch? used to live in Wagga Wagga?...I think.
May be in his eighties or nineties now. He was possibly a Uranium prospector.

I did a bit of a search on Ancestry ,where i am doing my own family tree , and the only Jack Winch from Wagga Wagga i found , died in 1970 at age 71 and is buried in Canberra. His wife was Charlotte. I couldn`t find any sons by the same name, but could the bloke you are looking for be a son of the one i found ? There was another John ( Jack ) Harley Winch born in 1919 who lived in Parramatta . From what i see , he had a son , also called John Harley Winch who was born in 1944 and died in 2007 , aged 62 .( See pic in next post., below ) I can`t add photos in EDIT mode .Hope this may help. Someone may be able to correct me if any of this looks wrong. Geneology websites can be confusing and have wrong info.

Thanks for that bit of research.
A number of years ago I acquired an old Gamma Scintillation  radiation detector (that still works perfectly) and in the canvas carry bag there is an NSW Miners Right dated 02/07/1955 for a Jack Winch of  Main street Wagga wagga. (cost 5 shillings) for 1 year. along with some letters to and from the detector manufacturer in Canada up to as recent as 1965.
There is a piece of Strontium ore for calibrating the detector still in the bag and banging away at 30,000CPM which is equating to around 35 uSv per hour of gamma radiation. Approx 3 times the current daily limit.
I thought it might be interesting to see what I could find out about this bloke but now I am beginning to feel that I should let him rest in peace.

This is the gamma counter.
The meter is indicating current back ground radiation level in my location which ranges between 0.18 and 0.24 uSv per hour. Reading is 1400 cpm.

It runs on the old style radio batteries. 67.5v  45v, 30v and 1.5 volt. These type cells (now alkaline) can still be obtained from   Ebay batteriesinaflash in the States.

No worries. Sounds like it is the first bloke i mentioned. He was on the electoral roll in 1943 as a station manager. That machine looks well looked after . Where would you find the need to use it ? What situations would you use it in ? I assume it a specialised piece of equipment ?

It is in excellent working and cosmetic condition.
You could use it anywhere that you might expect to be emitting gamma rays The unit responds to gamma radiation, it is shielded from alpha and beta emissions.

This item is designed for geological work ie uranium content of rock samples. The probe is directional in that it is sensitive from one end, when testing individual rocks of low level radiation although again gamma rays can enter the probe along the entire length of the probe.
