Green plastic bags on the gold fields - what are they and what do they hold? Empty Green plastic bags on the gold fields - what are they and what do they hold?

I have noticed green plastic bags full of soil etc on many of the gold fields that we have visited.
Some are sound whilst some have burst spilling the contents.

What are these bags, what do they contain and what do they do with them?

Peter.

Good morning Peter,
They are drilling samples, you may see a lengths of black poly pipe protruding from the ground, these have concrete plugs attached blocking off the holes. Plugging drill holes became mandatory after it was proven that our bush creatures were being lost down the drill holes.
Rule of thumb each sample bag represents one metre depth of drilling.

Hi Peta
As Nightjar explained they are the samples from drilling. Generally speaking they will be from RC drilling and will contain soil and powdered rock in the oxidised(or upper) zones and rock chips when the drill is in fresh rock. They are lined up in a sequence alongside the drillhole and are meant to be removed when the area is rehabilitated within 6 months. (In West Australia anyway) This used to be ignored all the time but these days the Mines Dept, are issuing fines to those who don't do the rehab on time. $100K or more!!
The rehab has been one of my jobs recently and disposing of the plastic from the decaying bags is a PITA.  A lot of companies are moving to piles of material and not using the plastic bags. Much easier to clean up.

As an aside, out in the desert country camels make a mess of the piles and also the bags. They like to rub their bellies over the piles as it is often coarse and scratches the parasites off. It makes it really difficult when doing a re-sampling exercise.

A lot of holes are now plugged with the orange plastic cones you see lying around, and the backfilled. The black poly pipes and concrete plugs are not used much at all now. Often we will place a nut or large washer in the cones and use a 7000 if we have to locate a drillhole for any reason. All drillholes are DGPS located before rehab so the location is not hard to find.

As for panning the dirt, good luck. The bags are nominally a 20kg sample so a hit of 100 grams per ton(gpt) will give you a whole 2 grams from a bag. Most bags will be 5gpt or less. Also we usually remove any bags that are carrying good grades.
