G'day & welcome to the forum welshy. Unfortunately I can't offer much of any help towards your quest, living in Victoria all my life but, am quite sure someone on here from Queensland can.
Regarding detectors, you'll have to be a little more specific about what your intentions of hunting down are. In other words, what exactly do you seek to prospect for? (natural in ground gold nuggets, coin, relics or a bit of all).

G'day Welshie.

Do some research on the Briagalong area. Gold was found there, that's all I know. It's the closest to Sale.

Regards Axtyr.

Here is a list of creeks n rivers where you are not allowed to fossick or pan in.
https://earthresources.vic.gov.au/licensing-approvals/recreational-fossicking/where-you-can-prospect-and-fossick/rivers-and-streams-where-you-cant-fossick

Aside from that most of the creeks n rivers around sale and Licola have gold in them but they can be really difficult to get to due to the dense bush, but once you have gained access you are unlikely to be bothered by anybody else. Some can have detectable gold in the bedrock cracks....if yer lucky.
