Re: coiltek coil opinions please - 17 x 10
Howdy Artrix,
For my money i would be going with a nugget finder.
I like to listen for the little whispers and from what i read, the other coils may have issues with false signals from loose wires inside.....
but if you like to make you tubes.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCvAr1_kS78
My opinion only and is unsubstantiated.
Cheers, Ferris.

Gday Artrix/Ferrous
I've got both the 17" mini ufo and the nf advantage 14x9.
The mini ufo can be bought s/h for about $150 whereas you'll have to buy the nf new for about $350. Not much gold needed to make up the diff.
The nf is a truckload quieter than the coiltek, probably just because of the size diff I'd suggest. My mate runs an 18" Goldstalker elipt and that's quite noisy as well compared to the 14" nf. Because of the quietness of the nf I seem to get a lot more depth, as you can hear every little nuance in the ground where the bigger coils tend to mask some signals.
The 14" nf is now my stock coil and is rarely off the end of the 4500. Sometimes it is replaced with a commando dd when the ground gets real ratty. Vary rare but.
I guess there's more coverage quicker with the larger 17" but I'd rather go a little slower and get better quieter cover with the 14"
cheers

Re: coiltek coil opinions please - 17 x 10
Both my wife and I have used the coiltek Goldstalker 14x9" mono for the last 3 seasons in WA. This equates to a full year detecting every day and these coils are still working as well as when we first got them.
They are a brilliant coil on both tiny gold and deeper nuggets. We have found many, many bits under point one of a gram and larger bits down very deep. First season we got over 1000 nuggets for 23 ozs. 2nd season, over 800 bits for 21 ozs. 3rd season over 700 bits for over 11 ozs.
Not bad for a couple of old retired farts. We know we couldn't have done it without the gear we had. Minelab 4000's and 4500's and the above coils.
Just my opinion.
Cheers, Jim

Re: coiltek coil opinions please - 17 x 10
Artrix,
I have had a mini UFO and a UFO (both now sold) and currently own Gold Stalker 14 and 17 ? elliptical monos. I no longer use the Gold Stalkers, as I found them too noisy for my style of detecting. I detect very slowly and either right on the ground or skimming it and constantly hitting rocks and grass. When I hit anything with the Gold Stalkers, they make a lot of noise - a bad thing when you are listening for faint targets.
The coils I use now are very quiet in comparison (when hitting objects during the swing). These are the Nugget finder 12" and Nugget Finder 17" mono elliptical coils.
The Gold Stalker Coils maybe as good or perhaps even better than the NF ones for users swinging higher and not constantly in contact with the ground like me. I have heard that the Coiltek coils are more robust, but this is only heresay (although I have owned six Coiltec coils and never had a problem, but my 17" NF went to God in WA last winter).
So I reckon the choice, comes down to your style of detecting.

G'day Artrix.
In my opinion, unless its a money issue,i suggest you don't buy that older style Coiltek Coil. You've been given some top advice by some very experienced people on this forum as to the reasons why.
Cheers kon61.

Not to hijack this thread.
but arethe NF coils mentioned in this thread compatable with the GP series detectors?

G'day Goldbait.
To keep it simple, they are compatible with the GP series detectors, but only on low to medium mineralized ground conditions. They tend to become noisy on the hotter ground, and are much better suited to the GPX series.

Re: coiltek coil opinions please - 17 x 10
A friend of mine who spent several weeks in WA (first trip) tried several different coils but went back to his old favourite, his 17" orange Coiltek eleptical that he has had since they first came out back in about 2003. He was finding gold down to .2 of a gram but then found an 8 oz speci containing 6 ozs of gold at his full arms length deep. I saw him dig it so I know how deep it was and he said it gave a good signal. He was using his GPX4000.
Don't knock the old style coils they can still get the goods for you.
Cheers, Jim

Re: coiltek coil opinions please - 17 x 10
Good report Jim(granite2), when he found the 8 oz speci, was that particular 2003 17" x 11" solid (not the spoked 17" x 10" mini UFO) orange Coiltek elliptical he was using an AI, DD, or Mono coil ??
I had a round CoilTek 14" DD in 2001(loved it then). Also I have an open spoked terracotta colored DD drag coil also from 2003(with a very low two digit serial number) in storage that I have never used yet. I think maybe it was one of the very first terracotta ones put out after the white ones. So if old coils get that good of performance I should give it a try! Now they have the more power draining Pro DD line out.
In any case if you are leaving a 14" x 9" GoldStalker to go to something a bit bigger, a person would be tempted to move up to a 18.5" x 12" GoldStalker also.
Or look at the newer wound, round CoilTek 14" Pro Elite DD, I think this is a very good coil with the best DD performance available and I am thinking of getting one myself for my coil tool box for whisper quiet operation in mainly bad ground(also chattering EMI) that a Mono coil cannot handle well. I wonder if open spoked GoldStalker DD's will ever come out in the future?

Re: coiltek coil opinions please - 17 x 10
Hi Beeper,
the coil used to find the 8oz speci was a solid not spoked mono coil but I suggest the open or spoked UFO would also have found that target.
I'd post a photo of it if I could figure out how to do it. If some one wants to put it up for me I can email it to them to post.
I can't comment on the Nugget Hunter DD coils mentioned as I have not used them. We have only used the 14"x9" Coiltek mono for the last 3 seasons in WA. We haven't detected anywhere else in that time but will probably be back in the Vic fields later this year and may try them then. But going on what I have heard they are extremely good.
Cheers, Jim

I had a 17" Coiltek and it was the only coil I ever had that could not find gold. It was a dud. My 14" Nuggetfinder is now my favourite coil.

Re: coiltek coil opinions please - 17 x 10
Gday Panther
Was that the 17" eliptical coiltek dd pro coil?, I had one and gave up using it as I never found a thing with it, also a couple of mates had them and we all said they were pretty useless.
With the later gpx machines you are far better off using the later built coils, not that some of the earlier coils dont work on them as some work well, its just that as a coil gets older it can get issues with the wiring becoming unstuck inside and you get falsing and odd noises, sometimes they become touch sensitive, this is very obvious with coils like the 17" and 24" coiltek eliptical mono's and the 19" round coiltek dd Dingo coil, as they were encased in resin.
Its a case of trial and error, if you get a good one that has no issues your ok but if you get one that is touch sensitive it will drive you nuts, better off spending a bit more and getting a later one, I think that the 8+ kg nugget that was found here (stonefish nugget) some years back was found with a coiltek 17"mini ufo coil too, dont know what machine it was on though.
cheers
