Re: Found a sixpence
I think you are right, it does look like 1850. I took another photo and it's clearer in this one:

Re: Found a sixpence
Nice find, on the hunt!
Not meaning to hijack your thread, but I found a 1881 (or 1831) three pence in NSW in Mogo State Forest last week. In a creek bed under some rocks and gravel. Unfortunately, it looks like I scratched it getting it out.
Looking it up, I found the Vic Museum has one.

Re: Found a sixpence
Good finds the old silver.
AnnieL 1831 - even better. EDIT Wombat is right (of course) 1881 - Monarchs are important (sometimes )

Re: Found a sixpence
AnnieL I'm sorry to say it is not 1831. More than likely 1881 as it has Queen Victoria head on the coin and she reined from 1837 till 1901. If it was 1831 it would have had King William IV on the coin.

Re: Found a sixpence
Annie,
My view says it is 1837, it maybe worth some money. As Wombat says Queen Victoria began her reign in 1837.
Damn pity you smacked it with your pick.
Good luck.

Re: Found a sixpence
Onthehunt.
You will find it is an 1884 Maundy 3 pence.
The coin is very worn and the last digit is too straight to be a 7 so it will definitely be a 4. The third digit cannot be a 3 and since it has curves at the top and bottom it really looks like a 3 but you will find it is an 8. The 1884 coins all still featured the young Queen Victoria head as well. Look at it carefully and you will be able to make out the date.
Unless it is an extremely rare coin the pick mark wouldn't make any difference to the price given the condition of it.
Regards Axtyr.
