I am beginning to think that my fuzz ball is/was a white cockatoo at approx 1/2 to 1 k distant.

April 2020:

Awesome shots Adrian, you finally talked me into buying one before they are all gone on the web since its a discontinued model now, the P1000 is the active latest model now but too large to carry well. We ordered a P900 kit w/64 gig card and two batts, bag, couple days ago off Amazon, will use in Nevada when out gold detecting to try and get some wild horse photos and some antelope shots. Maybe get lucky and find some wild burro's too. I think the macro shots are very good, should be excellent indoor with proper lighting added.

You are certainly going to the right places to get some great shots.
Good luck on the trip.
I had a look at the 3000x cam and it is a heavy beast and the tripod mount is poorly placed. Have not been able to try one out. Whenever I get to the shop the battery is flat. ??. I guess this camera is mainly for those who need a really big zoom. Being able to take pics in RAW plus the hot shoe mount is an advantage.
I will be staying with the 900 for a while yet.

New visitor to our back yard arrived this arvo,
Gang Gang Cockatoos.
Very chilled out birds showing complete nonplus to our approach to within 1/2 a mtr.
Unusual to see them here at this time of the year. Maybe the fires have chased them here

Moon is still a bit orange tonight even though the bush fires smoke has cleared a bit at ground level.
Temp is chopping and changing a bit lately . 23deg C to day and going to be 40 tomorrow.

Shocked Well I've never ever heard of them or seen them ! They appear slightly smaller than a white cockatoo Question maybe theve been used to being feed :?:Do they sound the same as a white cockatoo Question Normally i'm dead set against feeding wild life ,but in these trying times I've thrown the rule book out ,so was in IGA today ,thought i'd get some cheap bird seed for apostle bird 's ,willy wagtails ,kurrawong's ,magpies ,finches ,but came away empty handed ,GAWD Shocked TALK ABOUT SELECTION Exclamation of pet food ,I thought us consumers were bombarded enough with too much selection Shocked I thought maybe one of those blocks with seed Question I know cocky seed easy enough ,but what about those birds I mentioned ,any ideas Question

G/day Hugh62.
Yes we used to not feed them but they seem to be struggling a bit these days so we supply them food and water daily.
Generally there is not a bird in sight but about a minute after putting food out the yard is chockers with cockatoos, galahs, crested pigeons, black birds, even the magpies have taken to eating seed, and at night a possum arrives that cleans up what the birds have left behind.

The Gang Gangs live along the SE coast low land areas and come into the higher ground during winter but this is the earliest that I have seen them in my back yard, so am guessing that the fires have moved them inland a bit early. These birds are by nature very tolerant of people and will allow you to get quite close. They are very noisy in flight but when feeding or perched in a tree they make a sound a bit like a cork being unscrewed from a bottle. When feeding they actually sort of make a quiet growling sound, very odd to hear from a bird.

Our magpies and Currawong like a bit of red meat (beef mince)and cheese and the occasional crumbly biscuit.
We give the small birds....wait for it! wait for it!...."Small bird seed", but the little sons of guns  seem to like the parrot food as well.

I have not seen an apostle bird but They are ground feeders so I imagine that small grass parrot seeds would be fine for this fella.
You could try the seed blocks. I find that when I leave a seed block out that the cockatoos demolish it quick smart. I even spotted one fly off with the whole block in its beak.Laughing

We have a new buddy.
This fella comes out to warm up in the sun and takes food from our hand..Getting cold now so he will likely go into hibernation soon...Hope he makes it through the winter.
