Hi argibargi,
Have you ever own any detector?

Do you plan to detect a lot or just occasionally as a hobby?
Do you have to cover the cost when you go detecting?
There is million factors why people take this hobby.
Sure common goal is gold but then we can all buy it.
Certain things which we experience detecting you cant buy.
Socializing, camping, drinks around camp fire, great times and mateship.

Justifying cost of detectors for me falls into different category.Amount of money we spend on cars, equipment, food and the rest is quite costly.

I think if we do it for money most of us would stay home and stay on a couch.
If i do it as a job i know i would die of hunger very fast.

Whatever reason we do its a fantastic pastime/hobby and it is such rewarding one.

Enjoy it.

Hi argibargi,

It may be just me but I'd seriously recommend not starting off with a 7000. If I was starting off now, I'd get a secondhand GP series with a decent coil, and find out whether you like metal detecting or not. It's hard work (but enjoyable), and it will take you a long time to get good at it. You most definitely should not believe the marketing hype that says if you spend $10,700 you'll be finding good gold in no time.

I'd say it took me a year and a bit, and many, many hours on the ground to start finding gold, and many more hours (probably well over 150 hours detecting now) till I could reliably find some gold. Plan to spend even more time doing research than out there also.

I have used a detector some years back. I only want to detect now and then hoping to atleast recover some costs.

As you have said golden, there is much more to detecting than just nuggets.

So i will take the advice and buy an older detector for the time being..

thanks guys
