Gday Bru-Tillie,

Gold is often associated with quartz and iron pyrites.

The chances you have gold is good as you have already found 2 indicators cheers
Have a look for some granite or slate as well and contact zones of all these.

If you let us know your general location, somebody would be able to fill you in on any gold previously found in your area, and what type.
ie surface/ alluvial or deep lead.

Good luck and a panning dish and a spade will give you your answer. Wink

Cheers,

FF.

Try this site. But around that area, yes there is gold as it is on the Lachlan Fold Belt

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q=mogo+gold+field

The old records down that way i think came under the "Murrumbateman" goldfields ?

The info generally doesn't just pop up, one lead will lead to another. Will have a look later, see what else i can find, but that website has a lot of the old newspapers scanned.

Good luck, was down at Depot Beach/ Murramurang before chrissy. Beautiful area of the world.

Cheers, FF.

Wow! Thank you so much. Just found an article on The Wolumla Gold Field from 1898, im from Mogilla, about 20ks away. Article states gold and silver bearing rocks were found in localities near Wolumla.
Off i go panning, until i can get my hands on a detector!

Have at look at Bonzle - may give you an idea of gold bearing areas:
http://www.bonzle.com/c/a?a=p&p=1303&cmd=sp&lstt=1

Shows the following reasonably close mines:
Vimy Ridge Mine is an open cut and underground gold mine
New Hope Mine is a gold mine
Tanja Mine is an open cut and underground gold and tin mine
Royal George Reef Mine is an open cut and underground copper, gold and lead mine
Douchs Mine is an underground gold mine
Mount Misery Workings on the Frogs Hollow Creek?
Mount Misery Mine is an open cut and underground gold deposit
Tantawangalo Mine is an open cut and underground copper, gold, lead, silver and zinc mine. Another name for this mine is the McCarthys Creek Mine
Polocks Creek Mine is an open cut and underground copper, gold and lead mine
Bull Mountain Mine is an underground copper and gold mine
Mount Momsen Mine is a gold and silver mine etc.

On nightshift at the moment but will check some other waypoints for you & post those if close by to Bega.

Cheers Matt

If you want PM your email address & I'll send you a KMZ file (use with Google Earth or Maps) with waypoints for around the Bega area. Some fairly close to Mogilla to check out.

You could have a bit of gold flowing through. Buy a goldpan and learn to dish before you do anything else.
my opinion regards Phil. Fools gold does not equal gold gold. All the best
