1790 Guinea found while after goldies in Wodonga
I was using my Tessoro Vaquerro a few Sundays ago looking for some goldies, you can imagine how i felt when i pulled this dirty disc out of the ground. it gave a different sound and seemed close to the surface, i dug about 6 inches and pulled out a Half Guinea 1790.

Yep, i was delighted especially in a quiet town of Wodonga. Shame it wasn't gold though, never mind, as you said still a great find for a Sunday morning hunt :-)

I hope it is gold for you, but the old timers used to make moulds and then cast them in a different metal.

That may explain the hole at the top. I don't think anyone would put a hole in a real gold Guinea specially in those days when a half Guinea was worth 10 shillings & 6 pence, a lot of money in those days. It looks like a fake as the edges of the coin is smooth were as the real one had ruff edges.

Re: 1790 Guinea found while after goldies in Wodonga
G'day Stoney
Great find and it is a half guinea of the "spade" design but they were only minted in gold, there were no silver guineas or half guineas so I'd take a closer look at it if you think it looks like brass.
However you may like to take a look at this,

Re: 1790 Guinea found while after goldies in Wodonga
I once saw a holy dollar at the Ballarat Gold Musem and it didn't look like gold. More like very dull brass, but it was gold alright. If your coin looks like brass I would suggest you get it tested as it may well be gold.
Cheers, and good luck, Jim
