Re: Bought a bit of Gold (Sort of)
Nice little item representing a very significant time in our gold history.
I wonder if you went out into the streets of our major cities and stopped the first person you walked up to and asked them what happened at the Eureka Stockade, would they be able to tell you?
I doubt it; and it would also be a fair bet that the person you asked would have a different native language than English/Australian

Sharkbait, if you don't mind, what did that set you back mate.??
Adrian until they do a full length movie of the Eureka uprising and the lead up to it. What you are say will be true and it will stay that way. It is the most important part of Australian history to the extent we live and see it now every day of our lives.

The Film is called :Eureka Stockade" filmed in 1942 staring Chips Rafferty.
The Irish played the most significant roll in forming the Australian culture, especially in the gold fields. By the time The Poms started arriving in force. Our music, dances, language, slang and character and culture was already set in stone, gold and sheep farming

Re: Bought a bit of Gold (Sort of)
Hi Wombat,it cost $15 and I think the postage was $8,which is a tracked package
Nice little markup for the govt. 23 bucks for a one dollar coin haha..but only 30,000 being minted,so I figured it was worth it
Here's a link to the Australian Mint webpage

Re: Bought a bit of Gold (Sort of)
A great story indeed. Peter Fitzimons tried to rewrite the history, as he always does but it is one of the most important events in our history. And there were many Italians involved as well. One even hid Peter Lalor from the troops and being a well educated bloke commanding several languages helped at the meetings as an interpreter, can't remember his name though even though I wrote about him in the G&T some years ago.

Re: Bought a bit of Gold (Sort of)
The big think about the 1949 Eureka Stockade movie was they did not know at that stage what the flag followen on the day really looked like.

The Deason family still live in the area to this very day. There relatives came to the 150 anniversary earlier this year of where the Welcome Stranger was found.
