Dog noses and gold nuggets.

Post  adrian ss on Fri Nov 02, 2018 4:57 pm

Has anybody tried to train their dog to sniff out gold nuggies?
Doggy sniffer organs are very capable of locating gold nuggs.
Just imagine that you have just ploughed your paddocks ready for planting in Wedderburn or anywhere in the Triangle and then you let your trained dog sniffer loose to check the whole paddock in almost no time at all. If you have trained him correctly and there be gold nuggs brought near to the surface of yer paddock.......Well that has to be way more accurate and cheaper than a 10 grand metal detector. Laughing

Gold doesn’t produce an odour so that might be a problem, unless it had a high copper or silver content

Are ya serious Adrian, it i'll probably cost you 10 grand just for the dog and 100 Grand to get the dog trained for starters.  I think the 10 grand detector is cheap in comparison. Laughing and only to find out the doggy thing it won't work on gold in all likeyhood. Sad

I dunno, Maybe the dog can detect gold ions and well, ya would have to train him yourself. Just give him a sniff of a bit of gold and tell him ta go fetch the one you buried earlier. Laughing....I don't have much to do tonight so thought I would play around a bit. Very Happy....Still waiting for my knee to mend. Rolling Eyes

First thing to do was make sure that the dog did not come from Canberra. It would have it's smell senses all stuffed up from all the bullshite in the area.

Cheers

Yeah not much of anything else here mate.
Actually this place is turning into one gigantic apartment block. I think they (Gov, Banks & Real estate agents) are trying to destroy family home ownership and stuff us all into apartments.

Didja know that Canberra is getting a Light Rail Service??
What a multi billion dollar white elephant that will be and how long do you reckon it will take the local hoons to trash the seats, start fights on board and spray paint the whole thing with graffiti This place is the graffiti capital of Australia.

There is another sort of gold that dogs are most useful in detecting......black truffles.
My wife's niece has a small business on the Mornington Peninsular called "Koolies Nose" whereby she contracts her team of Koolie dogs to sniff truffles from their underground hiding places.
She tells us truffles must be very much like gold, they are quite often found where you would least expect them to be.
Not that far behind gold in value either. Very Happy

Oh wouldn’t that be an awesome thing, if we could train our dogs to sniff out gold nuggets.

Just send our pooches out to do all the work. lol!

The only thing i could get our dog to do is help dig the holes.
We had a big dog once, and boy could he shuffle out some dirt! if we were behind him, we would end up covered in dirt Laughing

The only time our dog shows any interest in a gold nugget, is after we have handled it. Very Happy

Not as silly or unbelievable as it sounds Adrian although they can't sniff out nuggets as such they can certainly be trained to sniff out certain associated minerals. Google Oredogs.

I have heard about the Oredogs and I believe Customs have tried training dogs to find various metals . I have always wondered if a dog could locate gold nuggets or the mineral halo that can build up around buried nuggs in certain matrix
