Re: What is this thingy
Not threaded, is hollow and open at the pointy end.
These things are like little toy soldiers, I have found them bloody every place I have metal detected.

Maybe?? It looks burnt at the pointy end. It is fairly small though.
Is made from brass.

What is this thingy
Since you have found many, are they all exactly alike or are there different designs?
I am thinking that they are brass drawstring cord ends. I have seen lots of different designs all usually conical in shape.
I have found the odd one similar too and always thought that was what they were. You get modern ones in playgrounds and parks from off jacket drawstrings. It doesn't take much for the knot on the end of the cord to come undone, they are easily lost.

Re: What is this thingy
You might be spot on with chinese smoking pipes. Were these found in great numbers in one area ? If so, you may have come across some extensive chinese diggings and the chances are that there would be more chinese relics and currency in that area that you haven`t found ,yet .

Hmmmmm. Draw string cord ends??....Maybe. All are similar size. Some do not have a groove around the middle.
What would the early diggers have that would need a draw string? with brass knobs on
