PS, how far do you bury the rod so that the weight of the water doesn't bring it down?

...and you you hit it into the ground or open a hole and bury it?

Hi Costas, I just push it into the ground about 20 cms.(sharpened end)

It works brilliantly (if i say so myself ha ha)  Now the trick to a quick boil is lots of small twigs to really get those flames going around it. Getting it to boil on the coals is way too slow Very Happy

Thanks Pete, you jogged the old memory with your great billy holder. I made a similar one over 15 years ago, must get it out and take some pics and post it up.  Very Happy
