Hi all, can anyone give me some practical ideas about rigging up a piece of chain to drag behind me when im gridding out an area? What type of chain is good and what length should i use?

Hi,
My first chain i pulled(Madtuna's), just kidding was too short about 300mm long, it hardly made a dent on the ground so i doubled it to 600mm a bit better but probably a metre would do the job nicely with the chain links from 6-8mm thick not the 10-12mm ones they use for trailers and the like.

Any sort of cord with a clip to hook into your belt loop or something similar would do

Regards Ron

Gday Evan

As Ron said, you need a chain with good heavy links or it wont leave much of an impression on some ground, all it will do is part the rocks, about a metre or so long, and enough rope going from your belt loop to the chain so as that the best part of the chain will lay flat on the ground as you walk.

Its handy to have a snap hook on the rope, so that you can easily reach around and unhook the chain from your belt or harness, if you have to dig a target and you want it out of the way for a bit.

cheers

Ahh beg my pardon but why on earth would anyone need a chain for, i cannot fathom that somone would drag a chain behind them, a metal chain, beggers belief, when i first heard of chaining i thought people would hook up chains to the back of there car with rare earth magnets on the ends, and go over trashy ground with them first, or to use chains with hooks too the back of the car to rip out vegitation in a fast manner, i dont get it why would someone drag a chain behind them.

Gollstar, This is what a lot of the really good detectorists do to make it
more of a challenge to find a piece of gold.
It is sort of like a handicap in golf.

(with apologies, I couldn't resist),

Gday

Well as for pulling a chain behind you I thought that the answer to this would be obvious?, Have you ever tried to push one? Rigging up a rope and chain to grid Icon_biggrin

I remember commenting about the use of chains one time on another thread, as on one trip everywhere we went in a particular area we found chain marks, chain marks covered the place, criss crossing here and there, this was in a well flogged area too, we dubbed the chainer as the "chain man", we would pull up and lo and behold there were chain marks, Oh crap " chain mans" been here too.

Then someone commented on people using a chain so that they can follow the marks back to camp, well if thats what they were doing in that area I hope they were not in any hurry, they are probably still wandering about the place following the chain marks.
