While out detecting Empty While out detecting

Post  davsgold on Fri Oct 11, 2013 6:49 pm

G'day all

When out detecting I came across this nice looking piece of rock, it stood out in amongst the iron stone and was easy to speck. I put it in my pocket and took it home, had a jeweller mate look at it and we reckoned it would facet up nice.

It started off about 26 ct and the finished result is 12.9 ct

This is the end result

Beautiful Dave. Its amazing sometimes, things that just look ok in the their natural state, that when they are cut, look so great. A lovely present to You and Veronica.

Close but no, when I first got back to camp with it I was pretty confident and gave it the, will it cut glass test, and well yes it gut glass easily so I look up things that will cut glass and well everything from Quartz to Diamond will cut glass so that didn't help much.

Anyhow when we get to take it to the jeweller mate he looks at it and says nice.

Well OK OK it's a piece of Quartz Crystal.

Here is one cut the same as mine and weighing 4.9 ct for $122.50 US

Mine weighs 12.9 ct so I guess it is somewhere around the $322.50 US going by those calculations

Thats a very nice rock Dave.
Now if you find any more, check it carefully for any colour inclusion (not an oxided fault). It could be a slight blue, orange or green/yellow blur.
It is quite common in quartz, the usual thing is to cut it out during the preform.
For any stone like that, if the slight colour spot is included and positioned at the culet (point) when cut, the colour will diffuse right through the stone for a brilliant effect.

Thanks fellas, having never had anything done like that before I wasn't sure what to expect, but I an very happy with the end result.

Mike (boobook) I notice when I sit it on different colour cloths there is a cone shape in the center of the stone, of the colour it is sitting on that comes right through to the top of the stone, looks neat.

No mate, I never even thought to take a before pic, took it down to show Dicko (jeweller) and never gave another though about a pic till Veronica reminded me we had none, well it was to late then, Dicko had organized to send it away.

Hey Ark, those Topaz earrings are very nice, my mrs reckons that something like them, and get the stone I had faceted set into something to make up a nice set would be great. Very Happy

Seeing all of this I can understand why gemstoneing has such a large following. The jemstone and jewellery show which appears once a year at Bathurst is enormous.

Rarely have seen so many displays, quite a bit of gold nugget selling as well.
