Our WA Trip 2012 Empty Our WA Trip 2012

Post  davsgold on Fri Oct 05, 2012 11:02 am

G’day All

We left for our detecting trip to WA at the end of April 2012 it is over 3000km and takes four long days traveling, towing the van. We arrive in Kalgoorlie in the beginning of May and buy supplies then keep heading north a bit further.

We setup camp around Laverton and spend about a week or so there before going to the meeting/camp that Nightjar organized which was for a week, there were about 20 people attending the camp and everyone had a great time, and everyone got gold which was a bonus, and it’s always good to meet new people.

We stayed on at Wilson’s Patch for a further 2 weeks or so and then went back to Laverton for another 3 weeks, then returned to Wilson’s Patch for another stint, with a section 20a. After awhile the weather started looking like rain so we headed for Leonora for a week and detected around there.

When at Laverton we meet up Jefgold and his troop and chatted for awhile, then while at Leonora we meet Jeffs group again and they seemed to be having a good time, Jeff invited us to go out with them for the day to where they were going to camp, which we did and some nice gold was found in the area. This was just about the last couple of days that Jeff and his group had in WA and most of them were returning home after that.

We then headed out with a few 20a permits and found an area that looked alright to detect, so we setup camp and ended up staying for quite some time there. Moving to an area covered by some of the other 20a permits we found a good spot and stayed there till our time in WA ran out. By this time the weather was starting to warm up and the wind was coming up quite strong on most days, we had a great time in WA and can’t wait till next year to do it again.

It’s surprising how many people you meet out there doing the same thing, and it was good to have a chat, we never came across any hostile ones, but then we made sure we had 20a’s or permission to be where we were which takes the worry out of it.

We found the WA system to be excellent and Tengraph a real help in knowing exactly where you could be without getting into trouble. A good GPS and know how to use it is essential.

In the end our trip lasted five months, and about four months detecting time, the weather was great, and no vehicle troubles, well just a couple of punctures, which were taken care of thanks to the push in plug things. So now we have arrived back home on the 1st Oct and having a bit of a rest after the long drive back.

Our total for the trip is 731 nuggets, 21 specimens, and 32 Tektites

Gold weighing in at about 22.5 ounces

Some Pictures and Videos, for your viewing pleasure.

cheers dave & veronica

Great story and pictures Dave,
Can you explain more about tektites. We found black marbly stones like in your photo and broke some open with a hammer and was no gold in them. The sound like a good target though when you detect one.

To Travelergold

Tektites make no sound on the detector you just speck them, they are way lighter than a similar size iron stone pebble. They are a dark green glassy type of material.

Here is a couple of links about Tektites

Thanks for that dave, They looked same on picture but what we were picking up were a sort of ironstone we think. They were magnetic and stuck good to a magnet.
Must keep our eyes peeled for these, its amazing what you do pick up when out swinging. I do not know about others but when I detect I always have eyes glues to ground in concentration looking and listening for those adictive targets.

Wow thanks Dave, I like the story and your gold.

Especially this pix as your nugget surrounded by black pebbles ( it's similar to black sand ).

Same as the similar size nugget I found over 3,000 kms. away from your patch.
I notice that big nuggets I found always accompanied by big black stuffs like yours. ( but no sunbaked ones )

If the black stuff is small so the size of nugget.

Thanks everyone for your replys.

Nohave, yes it's a good sign to have the black pebbles (Ironstone) and a mix of quartz in the area you are detecting, were looking forward to doing it again next year.

Great post Dave,
Remember mentioning this to you previously, however:
When we first found some "leaf gold" we thought it was remains of old brass electrical fittings?
Highly mineralised area, the hot rocks were so pure, feel sure you could strike an arc on them?
Our theory was the sheets of gold had been compressed within the iron stone and released when the formations broke down?

We done Dave, nice to see that you and Veronica had a great trip and achieved what you set out to do. It was a very readable post and the pics and videos just make the mouth drool. One thing for sure is that in WA the whole atmosphere is different in enjoying what OZ is all about. I know that it was special to me and to meet like minded people like yourself was great.

Thanks for putting up your story so now look out the the hundreds from the forum who will hiding around the bushes waiting for you to go by. I had a convoy of nine caravans, just magine what you would have. (Just joking) Very Happy I can now appreciate what you can do on your own without others watching your every move. Glad you enjoyed yourself
